Occasionally, on certain bodies of water, the “perfect
storm” comes out of nowhere demolishing any boats
unlucky enough to be in its path. In 2010, Lake Geneva
was that body of water, Marc and Jeremy Hewkin were the
storm and the rest of the big bucks bass competitors got
in the way. On September 12th, team Hewkin
capped off their unbelievable season with their 3rd
victory in a row. The veteran tournament anglers
unequivocally dominated the Lake Geneva circuit this
year, winning all but one tournament. Oh, and by the
way, the tournament they did not win…they still finished
fourth.
Throughout the 2010 season, the fishing on Lake Geneva
became flat out tough. That’s been the trend over the
last few years and in practice for this tournament, some
anglers even reported getting skunked. Once again, Marc
and Jeremy have proved that they know how to “zig” when
everyone else “zags.” As everyone else’s weights
decreased at weigh in time in 2010, the Hewkins were
bringing bigger fish to the scales than ever before.
The team finally missed the 20 pound mark for the first
time this year on 9/12, but still managed to win by a
comfortable margin. Their 19.66 lb. bag was
anchored by the big fish of the tournament at 5.18
pounds. Rumor has it that they caught their
beautiful kicker largemouth toward end of the day and
used it to fill out their limit. It just goes to show that if a team wants to
win on Lake Geneva, they need to fish to the last minute
and stay mentally tough throughout. Clearly, team
Hewkin has what it takes to get the job done.
Congratulations to this father and son team on yet
another victory, Big Bass, Rollover Pot, and the Anglers
of the Year title. The team took home $950 for Big Bass
and the rollover pot, plus $1,500 for the win. That
totals $2,350 for their effort which is almost
impossible to beat for a local/weekend circuit!

“HAWG-N-SONS.”
Taking home $900 and 2nd place honors with 18.05 pounds
was the team of Joe and Kevin Hughes. This family
oriented team stormed into the top 5 in their first
tournament of the year on Lake Geneva. Facing a tough
bite they managed a solid bag of fish with a girthy 4.64
kicker largemouth. Congratulations on a great
tournament, a nice big check, and a beautiful plaque.
Lake Geneva anglers will have to factor in the threat of
Hughes & Hughes in 2011!
For the second tournament in a row Chris and Vaughn
Capasso claimed 3rd place for a $700 payday.
Their consistency is obviously paying off as they
continue to threaten for a big win on Geneva. The
brothers amassed 15.30 pounds of healthy largemouth to
edge out the team of Heim and Dasko who lost a ¼ pound
off their 15.35 lb bag due to an expired fish.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter the time of year or how well
anglers take care of their fish, occasionally they just
don’t make it. However, there is no disputing the FACT
that for the most part, bass tournament anglers take
better care of their catch than anyone on the lake and
are the biggest stewards of conservation out there.
Both Capassos appreciate the support of their friends,
families, and local 597 Pipefitters Union. It’s
definitely only a matter of time before the Cappassos
take top honors on Lake Geneva.
Thank you to Big Bucks Bass, Julie Palmer and her family
who ran another successful tournament. Thanks also, to
Action Marine, Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Outboards, the Main
Street Tap and www.badhabitfishing.com for their
sponsorships.
2009’s anglers of the year from this circuit, Brad Rubin
and Matt Vose, rode a wave of momentum into the classic
last year which helped them take home the title on Big
Green. Only time will tell if ‘Hurricane Hewkin’
can maintain its devastating force throughout the
Classic on Sturgeon Bay. It could be tough on such a
large and imposing body of water against so many other
seasoned and accomplished anglers. But, if the Hewkins
have an ace in the hole, it’s got to be their confidence
since they’ve won the sturgeon bay open four times in
recent years. It should be a heavyweight battle with
all the great fisherman and the WORLD CLASS fishery.
Good luck to everybody |
