Geneva #4 – Good Things Come…To Those Who Wait

By: Brad Rubin

9-11-11

Vaughn & Chris Capasso
1st place 22.83 lbs.

Matt Vose & Brad Rubin
2nd place 21.08 lbs.

For the last several seasons, Lake Geneva veterans and brothers Vaugh and Chris Capasso have been knocking on the door of a victory with numerous top 5 finishes.  On September 10th, 2011 they kicked that door down winning the final regular season tournament by over a pound and running away with the Anglers of the Year title.  The Capassos entered the tournament with a humble attitude, knowing this had not been their best time of year in the past.  However, they overcame a mediocre practice and sacked 22.83 pounds to nail down the victory.  Fishing hard to the very end, Vaughn and Chris caught their 2nd largest fish with just a few moments left to seal the victory.  Congratulations Capassos on a well-deserved win and the prestigious Angler of the Year points championship.  Vaughn and Chris took home $1,300 and will fish one tournament for free next year for their AOY crown.  The winners thanked their families and their competitors for always challenging them to become better anglers.

Two of those competitors that are also usually near the top of the leader board are Brad Rubin of Antioch, IL and Matt Vose of Aurora, IL.  This team paired up for an impressive 21.08 pounds of Lake Geneva bass to claim second place.  Their hefty limit was anchored by a 5.64 pound largemouth that Matt caught on his second cast of the day, which was Big Fish for the tournament.  The rest of the day was a grind for these former AOY champions as they caught fish shallow and deep on everything from top-waters to jigs.  Persistence paid off as they also fished hard to the very last minute and managed to help increase their weight throughout the day.  Rubin and Vose earned $1,000 for second place, along with $580 for big fish…giving them a total of $1,580 for their day.  Both fishermen are extremely grateful to their families for their love and support.  Brad also enthusiastically thanked his sponsors www.webeewaxin.com in Antioch, IL which has his Boat and Truck looking immaculate, www.davesreelservice.com for having his equipment in tip-top shape, and www.dirtyjigstackle.com for simply making baits that put fish in the boat.  Matt graciously thanked his sponsors Xtreme Lubricants, www.Talonlures.com, KicknBass Fish Attractant, and www.Matthewvose1.com.

Taking home $800 for third place was the up and coming team of John Graham and Brannon Daley who brought 20.73 pounds to the scales.  Any team that weighs in over 20 pounds in a Lake Geneva tournament is a force to be reckoned with.  John and Brannon are beginning to make a name for themselves as they join the list of top contenders on this great fishery.  It wasn’t long ago that the Capasso brothers were breaking into the top 3, so look for more great things out of Graham and Daley in the near future.  23 teams competed in this event, weighing 128 fish for an average of 2.98 pounds.  The average weight per team was a solid 15.65 pounds.  All fished were released alive so that this fantastic fishery can continue to kick out beautiful fish and giant weights.

We hope to see all the classic qualifiers vying for the large cash purse on the Madison Chain on September 30 and October 1st.  This classic promises a display of an awesome fishery with some of the best fishermen in the Midwest unlocking the secrets to giant bags of bass.  With the locals favored to win…will someone with a fresh perspective be able to come in and pull off an upset?  Or will the names from the Madison regular season dominate the leader board?  Stay tuned as the results unfold at the end of the month.
